Description from the Alpine Garden Society (http://encyclopaedia.alpinegardensociety.net/)
This is a clump-forming species, probably fully perennial but said by some authorities to be monocarpic; this is not true of recent introductions. Rosettes in winter are small and globular, the leaves having spine-like tips. Summer leaves are oblanceolate, distinctly stalked, 5-7cm long overall and covered with silky hairs. Flowers 7-12mm across, from magenta-red to purple, with a yellow eye. They are carried in dense umbels on stems 12-30cm in height. Western China and eastern Tibet on mountains above 2500m in alpine meadows. Rarely cultivated, plants under this name being confused with A. strigillosa.
