Aspidistra bicolor is a rare, evergreen perennial plant species belonging to the genus Aspidistra (commonly known as cast iron plants). First scientifically described by botanist Hans-Jürgen Tillich in 2005, this rhizomatous geophyte is native exclusively to the wet tropical forests of Vietnam, specifically within the Thái Nguyên province. Like other members of its genus, it belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
  • Growth Habit: It is a slow-growing, rhizomatous perennial that spreads via underground stems.
  • Foliage: It produces tough, leathery, lance-shaped or elliptic leaves growing directly from the ground on long stalks (petioles).
  • Flowers: The species name "bicolor" refers to its distinct, two-colored floral structure. Its unique, star- or bell-shaped flowers grow at ground level and are typically obscured by the dense leaf canopy.
  • Chromosomes: Scientific studies show it has a specific chromosome count of 2n = 38
