Aspidistra longgangensis is a rare, evergreen rhizomatous perennial plant native to the limestone areas of southwestern Guangxi, China. First described in 2015, this plant is known for its stiffly upright, dark green, and leathery leaves (up to 28 cm long) and small flowers that bloom close to the ground. 
Key Characteristics & Habitat
  • Native Range: Exclusively found in the Longgang National Natural Reserve in Longzhou County, near the northern border of Vietnam.
  • Foliage: Features broadly ovate to ovate-oblong [pachyphyllous (thick/leathery)] leaves that grow from creeping rhizomes.
  • Flowers: Its fleshy flowers are usually perianth lobes with base appendages, and its stigma upper surface is typically white with 4-radial, bifurcate lines.
  • Chromosome Count: 2n = 38
