Aspidistra nankunshanensis is a rare, understory evergreen plant native to the Nankunshan National Forest Park in Guangdong, China. Discovered in 2013, this shade-loving rhizomatous perennial thrives in the deep shade of evergreen broad-leaved forests at elevations of 350 to 450 meters.
Botanical Distinctions
  • Appearance: It belongs to the cast-iron plant genus (Aspidistra) and is closely related to Aspidistra punctatoides and Aspidistra shimentaiensis.
  • Flowers: Its small, unique flowers emerge directly from the rhizomes at the base of the plant. It is distinguished from similar species by its entirely yellow perianth and pistil, along with four inconspicuous radial lines on the center of its stigma.
  • Habitat: It requires high humidity, well-draining soil, and consistent protection from direct sunlight, making it highly adapted to river valley microclimates.
