Aspidistra thanhhoaensis is a newly described, rare species of evergreen, rhizomatous perennial in the Asparagaceae family. Discovered and documented in Vietnam's Thanh Hoa Province, it is part of the well-known Aspidistra genus (commonly referred to as "cast-iron plants").
Key Characteristics & Habitat
  • Discovery: The species was formally described in 2026, adding to the growing number of Aspidistra species native to the shaded, forested understories of Eastern and Southeastern Asia.
  • Physical Traits: Similar to other species in the genus (such as A. bogneri and A. elatior), it is characterized by its tropical-looking, broad, deep-green foliage and unique flowers that bloom at soil level.
  • Resilience: Like its widely cultivated cousin, Aspidistra elatior, it is highly adapted to dark, low-light environments and is resilient in a variety of conditions.
