Bergenias are clump-forming perennials in the Saxifrage family, which contains a lot of species noted for growing in rocky crevices in mountains or along streams. This species produces large, round, leathery leaves that emerge purple and become glossy green. In late April or early May, clusters of deep magenta bell-like flowers hang from 15-inch stems. The plants can take dry semi-shady conditions after becoming established. Native to the Himalayas, they are more winter hardy than the more common species of Bergenia.
